Latifah was
born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970 in Newark,
New Jersey.
Hip-hop's
first lady, Grammy award winner, and actress likes to
eat huge plates of food everyday, insisting she would
never diet and has no desire to be a typically tiny
Hollywood star.
She declares
"I like to eat a meal! I like anything that puts weight
on me. I am not one to turn down macaroni and cheese,
even late at night. " And on some of her favorite
foods, she says "I love Italian food. I love pasta. And
give me Indian food! I love my curry, my tandoori. I get
bored with yogurts and broccoli."
So it
shouldn't come as a surprise that a young Dana Owens had
a brief stint as
a Burger King employee before embarking on her musical
career. And today, she is a spokesperson
for Pizza Hut.
Plus-sized and proud of it,
Latifah insists she has loads of fans who admire her for
being big and proud. She also says her curvy figure sets
a good example to young women - because it shows you
don't have to be super-slim to be happy.
Latifah enjoys the food in
her hometown and readily recommends her top picks:
For breakfast, "Je’s is the
spot” she says. They serve soul food, grits, eggs,
omelets, pancakes, French toast, and the clincher for
her - turkey sausage.
She says "One of Jersey’s
favorite foods is the Italian hot dog, or an Italian
sausage on a quarter piece of round bread. You can get
anything you want on it: sautéed onions, peppers,
ketchup, the works. There are a bunch of places you can
get it, including right on Bransford Place and Holiday
Street.”

On restaurants, her choices
are Maize at the Robert Treat Hotel for a great mixture
of Asian, American, French & Italian dishes, and John's
Place in midtown Newark for baked chicken, the best
short ribs, and "Peach daiquiri that's off the hook."
As for drinks, her selected
poison is Tequila - El Patron!
At the beach, the boardwalk is where she heads for fried
shrimp, fried calamari, pizza & hot dogs. Spots of note
she shares are Point Pleasant, Belmar, Seaside Heights,
Long Branch and Asbury Park.
And for
dinner, its back to Ironbound, where she once lived.
The neighborhood is now a melting pot of Spanish,
Brazilian and Portuguese culture. Of the
restaurants there, the Queen's favorite is Spain, where
she enjoys their garlic shrimp appetizers and paella.
Spain, and another preferred choice, Iberia, are her
picks for fresh seafood, lobster and fish dishes.
Besides her love for food,
Queen Latifah is also an active down-to-earth person.
She puts herself into boot camp regularly - to keep her
ego in check. "Sometimes I've had to go away by myself.
I go to a boot camp - you hike for 70 miles in a week
and you do yoga and swim. It's a place to come and detox
- just to detox from Queen Latifah and Hollywood."
